Eid al-Adha is a major Islamic holiday celebrated between May 26th to May 29th this year; And whereas, Eid al-Adha is not only celebrated with prayer, but also Qurbani, the symbolic sacrifice of an animal to share with family, relatives, friends, and those in need; And whereas, Ontario has strong food safety regulations, allowing the slaughter of food animals for Eid al-Adha but limiting the work to Provincially licensed meat plants; And whereas, the number of Provincially licensed meat plants in Mississauga and Peel Region is scarce, leading to limited supply and higher prices of specific halal meats during Eid al-Adha; And whereas, this limited supply and high demand has led to predatory business practices where members of our Muslim community have purchased meats for Eid al-Adha, uncertain if the product they are purchasing actually meets Halal standards set for this festival. Now therefore be it resolved: That the Regional Chair write a letter to the Premier of Ontario and the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness to request that current regulations be amended to permit additional capacity for Eid al-Adha, such as allowing additional temporary locations so long as they comply with provincial food safety regulations; and That a copy of the letter and motion be provided to all Peel Region MPPs.
